Adherence and morphology of guinea pig alveolar macrophages: effect of N-formyl methionyl peptides.

چکیده
N-Formyl methionyl phenylalanine increased alveolar macrophage adherence and diameter and induced morphological changes associated with activation. N-Formyl methionyl phenylalanine may be useful in understanding macrophage activation and bacteriolytic function.

Stimulation of oxygen consumption and superoxide anion production in pulmonary macrophages by N-formyl methionyl peptides.
A number of metabolic changes occur when phagocytic cells (i.e., polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN)) interact with certain soluble and particulate stimuli (reviewed [l-4]). These metabolic changes include an increase in oxygen consumption, stimulation of hexose monophosphate shunt activity, superoxide anion production (O;), hydrogen peroxide prnduction and chemiluminescence. It has been propos...
متن کاملDifferences in the effects of two hexachlorobiphenyls on superoxide generation by polymorphonuclear leucocytes stimulated by N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine and phorbol myristate acetate.
The effects of hexachlorobiphenyls (HCBs) on superoxide (O2-) generation by guinea pig polymorphonuclear leucocytes were examined. 2,3,6,2',3',6'-HCB by itself had only a weak inductive effect on O2- generation. This compound, however, enhanced O2- generation stimulated by N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP) about twofold, but not the generation induced by phorbol myristate acetate (...
متن کاملProtein tyrosine kinase but not protein kinase C inhibition blocks receptor induced alveolar macrophage activation
The selective enzyme inhibitors genistein and Ro 31-8220 were used to assess the importance of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) and protein kinase C (PKC), respectively, in N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP) induced generation of superoxide anion and thromboxane B(2) (TXB(2)) in guinea-pig alveolar macrophages (AM). Genistein (3-100 muM) dose dependently inhibited FMLP (3 nM) induced s...
متن کاملInfluence of growth temperature on virulence of Legionella pneumophila.
The effect of growth temperature on the virulence of a strain of broth-grown serogroup 1 Legionella pneumophila (Wadsworth F889) was examined by growing the bacterium at different temperatures and then infecting guinea pigs (by intratracheal injection) and guinea pig alveolar macrophages. The 50% lethal dose for guinea pigs infected with 25 degrees C-grown F889 was log10 5.0 CFU and that for 41...
متن کاملChemiluminescence of phagocytic cells caused by N-formylmethionyl peptides
N-formylmethionyl (F-Met) peptides, when added alone to macrophages or polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), were found to induce a chemiluminescent response of shorter duration than that produced by the commonly employed particulate stimulant, zymosan. The cellular nature of F-Met peptide-induced chemiluminescence was indicated by its dependence on cell concentration, and by its inhibition by ce...
